HOSPICE

Bethany Hospice provides skilled medical and care services with compassion and dignity for terminally-ill patients who want comfort and support at the end of their lives. A candidate for hospice services is someone who has a chronic disease/condition from which he/she is not expected to recover.

Hospice care treats the whole person’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs in the last phase of life. These services may be provided at home, in an inpatient facility, nursing home or in another setting that suits the needs of the patient and caregivers. Hospice care helps the person to live at home or in the most comfortable setting as long as possible, stay as active as possible, express and accept feelings. Hospice care also assists the family to care for their loved one, manage practical tasks, deal with stress, and feel at peace.

Hospice uses a team approach to supplying the patient and families’ needs. This team is called an Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) and is directed by a licensed physician and a registered nurse. The team consists of licensed nurses, social workers, bereavement counselors, chaplains and other staff such as therapists and certified nurse aides. You and your family are also an integral part of the IDT and have the right to participate in the plan of care, should you wish to do so. The IDT plans and coordinates the care of the patient and is available 24-hrs a day. Hospice benefits also include; medications, incontinent supplies, and DME equipment.

The objective of the care plan is to keep the patient as comfortable as possible and allow them to stay in their own homes, or familiar surroundings so quality of life can be maintained. If a patient on Hospice improves or stabilizes they can be discharged form Hospice and admitted to home health. Hospice is paid for through the Medicare Hospice Benefit, Medicaid Hospice Benefit, and most private insurers.

You have the right to revoke the hospice benefit at any time and for any reason. Revocation means you no longer require or want hospice services. Once the hospice benefit is revoked, Medicare Part A benefits will be reinstated.
